*Faccia and viso are synonyms and can often be used interchangeably. But there are following differences:
1. faccia is the most general word and is used with concrete and figurative meanings: lavarsi la faccia to wash your face, perdere la faccia to lose face;
2. viso is a slightly more elegant word with concrete meaning: avere un bel viso have a beautiful face, la crema per il viso face cream.

There is also a third word for the face: il volto. Volto has a limited use, is more formal and literary than viso and faccia, and it is used, for example, in artistic works: il volto della Vergine the face of the Virgin.
