Episodio 1 • Siamo pronti?

«Sei pronta?»
«Devo solo lavarmi i denti» risponde Padroncina. Poi va in bagno, prende spazzolino e dentifricio e inizia a lavarsi i denti.

Bau! Noi siamo prontissimi!

1. Are we ready?

«It’s going to be a beautiful hike!» says Mom in a good mood, in one hand a map and in the other a cup of coffee. It’s the morning of the first day of vacation and I’m already very excited. Yesterday the trip was very tiring and last night I slept like a log, but now I’m ready to spend a beautiful day in the mountains!

Buddy is also on vacation with us. Buddy is my favorite human – after Mom of course – and he is my great friend. That’s why I call him Buddy!
«Mattress, flashlight, matches,…» he murmurs to himself as he checks his backpack.
«It’s all there» he finally says. «Are you ready?»
«I just need to brush my teeth» replies Mom. She puts the map in her backpack and quickly washes her cup. Then she goes into the bathroom, takes toothbrush and toothpaste and starts brushing her teeth.

Cody and I bark happy and run to the door. Woof! We are very ready!

Episodio 2 • Abbiamo preso tutto?

2. Have we got everything?

Mom comes out of the bathroom, turns off the light and then goes into the corridor, where she puts on her new hiking boots.
Mom is very proud of her new hiking boots: she bought them at an affordable price just before leaving for her holidays. They are beige and smell new! But not for long, because soon they will smell like feet…
After fastening the laces well, she puts the backpack on her shoulders – which looks very heavy – and finally puts a black cap on her head.
«I’m ready now!» she exclaims happy and opens the door. «Let’s go!»

It is a beautiful day. There is some cloud in the sky, but it shouldn’t rain. So said the weather forecast.
«I forgot the sunscreen!» exclaims Mom suddenly, one hand still on the door handle.
«I got it» says Buddy.
«And you got the first aid kit too, right?» she asks a bit worried.
«Of course I got it.»
«And the bottles of water?»
Come on, Mom, how long will it takes you? I bark impatiently.
«Yes, I got them» he answers with a sigh. «Don’t worry, we’ve got everything, we’re well equipped.»
Mom finally relaxes and locks the door.
It’s about time!

Episodio 3 • Il sole tramonta

Cody intanto annusa in giro e sembra preoccupato.
«Che succede?» gli chiedo.
«Sento un odore strano.»
Allora anch’io annuso in giro.

3. The sun sets
Finally we do a break! I think while I lay down in the shade of a big tree.
We walked for a few hours and now I’m very tired. And I’m also very thirsty! Luckily Mom fills a bowl with some fresh water for me and Cody.
Mom and Buddy get the packed lunch out of their backpacks and eat, then we’re back on our way.

Afternoon goes by fast and I start to worry. The sun is already setting behind the mountains and it’s getting dark. Aren’t we going home?
A little later we arrive in a clearing and Mom puts her backpack on the ground.
«We have arrived!»
«Shall we build the tent here?» asks Buddy.
«Yes! It’s a good place, isn’t it?» she answers, looking around satisfied.
Build the tent? So we don’t go home for the night. I’ve never slept in a tent before. I’m very excited!

Cody, meanwhile, is sniffing around and seems worried.
«What’s going on?» I ask him.
«I smell something strange»
So I’ll sniff around, too. He’s right. There’s probably a wild animal’s lair nearby.
We have to keep watch tonight.

Episodio 4 • Incontri notturni

Ma no, è solo Padroncina.

L’aria notturna è fresca e piacevole.

4. Night encounters

It’s nighttime and I can’t sleep. I’m not used to sleeping in a tent and it’s all very exciting. But I’m also a little worried about that strange smell.
I think back to the nice evening we had. We made a fire, had dinner and played some ball. I love playing with the ball, it’s so much fun!

Suddenly something moves in the tent. What’s going on? Is there someone – or something – in the tent?

But no, it’s just Mom. She gets up and slowly walks out of the tent. But where does she want to go?
Cody woke up too and together we followed her outside.

The night air is fresh and pleasant. The full moon shines above us and illuminates the clearing. Even the stars shine in the blue sky. Mom walks towards the trees and then… I hear an unmistakable noise and smell. Ah! She has to pee!
Cody also walks up to a big tree and raises his leg and I too look for a little place to go potty.
I approach a bush. It has green leaves, little red berries, and…. two pairs of eyes! I bark in fright and the bush moves.

Out from behind the bush come two boars.

Episodio 5 • Scappiamo!

«Stop!

5. Run!

Well, these boars aren’t that scary…. They are small and pretty cute! They must be puppies.
But if these are the puppies, I think, where’s the…?

And then I hear an threatening grunt. Behind us, mama boar looks at us angrily with her little black eyes.
«Okay, let’s all be calm…» says Mom, slowly taking a step back. But mama boar looks really furious and starts running towards us. Run! I bark scared and we all start running.
There are lots of trees and it’s very dark. I can hardly see anything. Cody runs ahead of me and I follow his tail…but then Cody suddenly stops.
«Stop! Halt!» he barks desperately. I try to stop, but I don’t make it in time: I run into him.
Ouch that hurt…
I look past Cody and see… emptiness. The mountain ends here, in front of me there’s a cliff and a starry sky.
Luckily we didn’t fall down….
But then someone screams. I turn around and see Mom trying to stop, but it’s too late.

She falls and disappears into the void.

Episodio 6 • Speranza

«Padroncina! Padroncina!!!»

«Perché state abbaiando?
«Cazzo!» esclama. «Devo cercare un punto dove c’è campo. Voi restate qui!» E corre via.

«Ma quanto ci metterà a chiamare i soccorsi? E quanto ci metteranno i soccorsi ad arrivare? E cosa facciamo noi? Dobbiamo fare qualcosa!»
«Kira, calmati. E ascolta!» Cody si avvicina al dirupo con cautela. Anch’io mi avvicino in silenzio e ascolto. Poi lo sento. Acqua.
«Kira, dobbiamo trovare quel fiume. Forse possiamo ancora salvare Padroncina.»

6. Hope

«Mom! Mom!!!»
In a panic, I continue to call out to her. I run back and forth hoping to see her again, to hear her voice.
«Kira, quiet, something’s approaching!» says Cody. Oh no, the boar again?

But no, it’s not the boar, it’s Buddy. His hair is all shaggy and he’s wearing his jacket over his pajamas.
«Why are you barking? And where’s Ellie?» he asks yawning.
She fell down! I bark and show him the spot where Mom fell. Buddy looks down. And then… he seems to understand what happened. His face loses color and with trembling hands he pulls his cell phone out of his jacket pocket.
«Fuck!» he exclaims. «I need to find a spot where I can get a signal. You stay here!» And he runs off.

«But how long will it take to call for help? And how long will it take for help to arrive? And what are we going to do? We have to do something!» I can’t stop barking, I’m too agitated.
«Kira, calm down. And listen!» Cody approaches the cliff cautiously. I, too, quietly approach and listen. Then I hear it. Water. Below us, many feet away, is a river.
«Kira, we need to find that river. Maybe we can still save Mom.»

Episodio 7 • Uno strano uccello

«Aiuto!» urla l’uccello. «Aiutatemi! Sono incastrato!»
Incastrato?

Io e Cody ci rimettiamo in cammino.

Padroncina, non preoccuparti, stiamo arrivando!

7. A strange bird

Cody and I run in the woods, along a downhill path. There are less trees here and the moonlight illuminates the path. But will this be the right way to the river? Maybe we should ask the way… but who?

At some point we see a strange animal in the middle of the path.
I don’t know this animal. It’s quite small and brown. It has wings and feathers, so it’s a bird. Its head is strange, it looks like a bottle! It keeps moving left and right, it wiggles back and forth… it looks drunk!
«Help!» cries the bird. «Help me! I’m stuck!»
Stuck? Now I look at him closely and understand: his head doesn’t look like a bottle: it’s stuck in a bottle!
Cody immediately goes to help him: he grabs the bottle with his teeth and pulls.
«Ouch! Slowly! Slow down! You wanna rip my head off?» complains the bird. Cody pulls further and finally manages to free the bird’s head from the plastic bottle.
The bird has a small black beak, two big yellow eyes and two funny feather tufts on its head. It is an owl!

The owl cleans its plumage and gets ready to fly away.
«Wait!»
«What is it?» says the owl annoyed.
What a bad character… …we free it and it doesn’t even thank us…
«Do you know where the river is?»
It points the way with his wing. «You have to keep going in that direction. Always follow the path, it will lead you to the river.»
And that said, it flies away.
Cody and I make us again on the way.
Mom, don’t worry, we’re coming!

Episodio 8 • Le regole del bosco

Sento il rumore dell’acqua. Ormai manca poco, ci siamo quasi!
Ma all’improvviso c’è qualcosa davanti a me. E io ovviamente gli vado addosso. Ahia!

Precedenza a destra? Limite di velocità? Polizia?

8. The rules of the woods

I hear the sound of water. We’re almost there! I run even faster. Any moment now I will see the river, I’m sure of it.
But suddenly there is something in front of me. And of course I run into it. Ouch!

I look up and see long, elegant legs, a long, thin snout, and large, majestic – and dangerous – horns.
I immediately take a step back.
«I’m sorry, I didn’t see you…»
«Don’t you know you have to give way to the right?» says the deer with a stern look.
Behind him a large doe and a small fawn appear.
«And you definitely went over the speed limit!» he adds. «Do I need to call the police?»
Give way to the right? Speed limit? Police? What is he talking about, it’s not like we’re in the city!
«Dear, I don’t think they’re from here» says the doe. «They must be tourists. Maybe they’re foreigners.»
The deer look at us suspiciously.
«Yes that’s right, call the police» says Cody a little annoyed. «There’s been an accident at the river. Now excuse us, we have to go, we’re in a hurry» And without adding anything else, Cody runs off and I follow him without hesitation.
«Hey!» shouts the deer, but we do not stop.

The woods are really full of strange animals… I wonder if that deer will really call the police. And who are the police in the woods? I imagine an owl dressed as a policeman…
But I don’t have any more time to think about the strangeness of the woods: we’ve finally reached the river.

Padroncina è molto pallida, fredda e respira debolmente. Ma respira. Dalla gioia inizio ad abbaiare. È viva!
Lei apre lentamente gli occhi, ci vede e ci sorride. Poi li richiude.
«Cody, adesso cosa facciamo? I soccorsi non sono ancora arrivati…»
«Dobbiamo portarla noi all’ospedale»
«E come?»
Io e Cody ci giriamo e rimaniamo a bocca aperta.

9. She is alive!

In front of us is the river, illuminated by the moon, and on the other side is the mountain.
«Mom, where are you?» call Cody and I as we search here and there for her.
Several minutes pass, but no sign of Mom. I’m starting to get really worried. What if…
But then Cody barks. «Kira, I found her!»
I immediately run to him and Mom is there, in the river, her head and arms on a large branch, her eyes closed.
Cody and I immediately go to her and slowly pull her out of the river. Brrr the water is freezing!
Mom is very pale, cold and breaths faintly. But she is breathing. Out of joy I start barking. She is alive!
She slowly opens her eyes, sees us and smiles. Then she closes them again.
«Cody, what do we do now? Help isn’t here yet…»
«We have to take her to the hospital.»
«How?»
I look at the river in front of us. It definitely leads downstream, where there are humans and, maybe, a hospital.
«We would need…»
«…a boat?» says a voice behind us.
Cody and I turn around and remain speechless.

«Sì!!!» rispondiamo io e Cody all’unisono.

«Forza, salite a bordo!» dice Capitan Castoro.

10. The river pirates

«And who are you?» I ask in wonder.
«I’m Captain Beaver, the river pirate!» he replies proud. «So, do you need a boat yes or no?»
«Yes!!!» replies Cody and I in unison.
«Me and my pirate ship will take you anywhere you want! My ship is the best on the river. The biggest, the fastest, the most beautiful…»
«And it can take us to a place where there’s a hospital, too, can’t it?» asked Cody.
«My ship can take you anywhere! It depends on how much you pay…»
«But we don’t have anything, we can’t pay! Can’t you make an exception? Look, our mom is hurt!»
He looks at her for a moment. «All right, this is clearly an emergency. You can’t say we pirates aren’t generous! Wait here for me.»
And then he leaves.
Are wild animals always this bizarre?

After a few minutes a silhouette appears on the river. The pirate ship.
Well, at least it has a black flag with a white skull. But… it’s not a real ship.
It’s certainly not as big as a cruise ship or a sailing ship. It’s not even as big as a ferry, nor as big as a sailboat. Nor is it as big as a motorboat. It’s about the size of an inflatable boat.

It’s a pirate raft.
But we’re not complaining, it’s better than nothing!
«Come on, get on board!» says Captain Beaver.
The raft stops and some beavers get off and help us load Mom on board.
«We’re off!»

And so, we set sail.

Episodio 11 • Sul fiume

Spero di no…

«Cascata a ore dodici! Cascata a ore dodici!» urla l’aquila sopra di noi.
«Tutti ai vostri posti! Sapete cosa fare!» urla allora Capitan Castoro.

11. On the river

«Tailwind!» shouts Captain Beaver as he checks the river with a small spyglass. The other pirates sing and drink a strange drink that doesn’t smell good. In fact, they don’t smell good either…
Unfortunately, there is no parrot. Too bad! But there is an eagle flying overhead and it occasionally talks to the captain.
Mom has her eyes closed and hasn’t noticed anything. She’s still very pale and cold and Cody and I try to warm her up a bit. One of her legs is strangely warm though. Maybe it’s broken? I hope not…
It’s not so dark now, it’s almost dawn. After a while I hear a noise.
«A helicopter!» I exclaim in surprise.
«It’s the rescue!«» says Cody.
«Hey! We’re here!» We bark.
But the helicopter doesn’t see us and flies towards the mountain.
How unfortunate!
Then I hear another noise. It’s the sound of a…
«Waterfall at twelve o’clock! Waterfall at twelve o’clock!» shouts the eagle above us.
«Everyone to your posts! You know what to do!» shouts Captain Beaver then.
Startled, I close my eyes. And now what do we do?

The sound of the waterfall gets louder and louder. (free version)

Episodio 12 • La zattera volante

12. The flying raft

The sound of the waterfall is getting louder and louder.
I don’t want to open my eyes, I’m too afraid. All around me the pirates are running here and there and shouting orders.
How high will the waterfall be? I think terrified.
I hear Padroncina murmuring something. Has she woken up?

At a certain point everyone stands still and silent. There is only the deafening noise of the waterfall. I open my eyes: the waterfall is only a few meters away.
Mom, Cody, I love you. It’s my last thought before falling.

But then… we don’t fall.
Surprised, I see that above us there are some eagles holding with their claws large ropes, which are tied to the raft.
I can’t believe it, we are flying!
«What the…?» Mom has waken up and looks totally shocked.
Good morning Mom!
In front of us the view is breathtaking. The mountains on the horizon, the trees, the river and the flowery meadows. The sun rising behind the mountains.

For a moment I forget all the problems.

«Siamo arrivati» dice Capitan Castoro.

«Buongiorno, agenti!» saluta Capitan Castoro.
Uno dei lupi fa un passo avanti. «Buongiorno, Capitano.» Agenti?
Incredibile! La polizia del bosco esiste davvero! Penso osservando affascinata questi grandi e bellissimi lupi.

13. The forest police

The eagles fly lower and lower and finally rest the raft near the shore.
«We have arrived» says Captain Beaver. «From here you must continue on foot, the village is not far. You only have to follow the path.»
A few feet from the shore, among the trees and bushes, is a small path.
Mom tries to stand up, but she can’t. She is very weak and can’t move her leg. It must be really broken. Damn, this is not good!
With the help of the beavers she manages to get off the raft, but she definitely can’t walk all the way to the village…. What can we do?

And while I think of a solution, a wolf appears from behind the trees. Actually, two wolves. Three, four, five, six… about ten wolves!
That’s all I needed… I think exasperated. How many animals live in this place?
«Good morning, officers!» greets Captain Beaver.
One of the wolves steps forward. «Good morning, Captain.»
Agents? Don’t tell me these are…
«A deer told us there was an accident at the river» says the wolf looking at me, Cody and Mom.
Unbelievable! The forest police really do exist! I think looking fascinated at these big beautiful wolves.

Episodio 14 • La slitta

14. The sled

The forest police came to help us. But one thing I still don’t understand…
«How do we get Mom to the village? She can’t walk…»
Some wolves come forward pulling an old wooden sled.
«Perfect!» I exclaim. Just what we need!
We help her into the sled. She is still very pale and weak, and most of all she seems to be very confused – maybe she thinks she’s gone crazy! So I bark to reassure her: It will be okay, don’t worry!
«Come on, let’s go!»

Cody and I also help the wolves pull the sled. The sled is heavy, but luckily the trail is slightly downhill. After a while we see the first houses. We’re finally here!
As Mom knocks on the door of a house for help, we say goodbye the wolves.
«Thank you for everything!»
«Take care of your human! And next time be more careful when you come to the mountains.»
And then they disappear into the woods.
And as we watch the sun rise in the sky, the ambulance siren echoes through the silent village.

We’ve made it.

Episodio 15 • Buona guarigione

Incredibile! penso sorridendo.

Padroncina ne sarà felice. Grazie, amici del bosco!

15. Good recovery

Mom was hospitalized for a couple of days and now has her leg in a cast. Our vacation in the mountains ended sooner than expected and we returned home. Mom is resting and doing almost nothing, so Amicone comes to visit us every day and does the cleaning, grocery shopping, cooking, walking us…. Cody and I also rest: it was a very tiring vacation!
At the hospital Mom told about the pirate beavers, the flying raft and the wolves, but the doctors didn’t believe her.

One night I hear a knock on the window. Mom is sleeping, so I go to open it – don’t tell Mom, but Cody and I can open doors and windows!
There’s an owl outside. But not just any owl, it’s the owl we freed from the bottle!
«A delivery for you» the owl says placing a flower on the window sill.
«Thank you» I say surprised. «Who’s it from?»
But the owl doesn’t answer and flies away.
This owl has a pretty bad character…

I bring the flower into the house and place it on the table. It is a beautiful white flower with yellow dots in the center. It is an edelweiss, a rare mountain flower. A note falls on the floor: Good recovery. Instead of a signature, there are several animal prints. Footprints of wolves, beavers and even deer…. and even an owl! Unbelievable! I think, smiling.

Mom will be happy. Thank you, friends of the forest!
