Mi alzo e vado in salotto. Guardo fuori dalla finestra. Qualcuno cammina in giardino.

Un ladro! Abbaio.

Vuole entrare in casa?

Vero?»
Ma certo!
«Grazie cari! Così aiutate non solo me, ma tutti i bambini! Dai, andiamo!»

Giriamo a destra, a sinistra, andiamo dritto… Kira ed io cerchiamo dappertutto. Cari dolci, dove siete?

Camminiamo fino al bosco. Un momento… Conosco questo odore. È odore di cioccolato! E sento anche odore di biscotti! Abbaio e scodinzolo agitato.

«Grazie mille mia cara!»
Poi apre il sacco, ma… «I dolci sono spariti!»
«Oh no!

«Avete salvato l’Epifania! Domani mattina tutti i bambini possono svegliarsi felici.»
«È stato un piacere! Noi ci siamo divertiti, vero?»
Assolutamente!

«Ciao Edo! Cosa fai qui a quest’ora?»
«Buon giorno dormigliona! È già mezzogiorno e tu mi hai invitato per pranzo, ricordi?»
«Oh cielo! È già mezzogiorno!» esclama Padroncina meravigliata e corre in bagno a lavarsi e vestirsi.

Dopo alcuni minuti Padroncina torna in salotto.

It’s the night between January 5 and 6, the night of the Epiphany. Everyone is sleeping, but I am awake. There is a very strong wind outside and I hear a noise. I get up and go into the living room. I look out the window. Someone is walking in the garden.
A thief! I bark.
Kira and Mom wake up.
«Cody, what’s going on?» asks Mom. Then she too looks out the window.
In the backyard is an old woman. In her hand she holds a broom. Mom opens the window.
«Lady, what are you doing? Do you need help?»
«A tragedy! A tragedy!» exclaims the lady desperately.
«What happened?»
«I lost my sack! The sack with the sweets for the children!»
«One moment… Are you the Befana?»

Befana? Of course! The Befana is an old lady who flies on a broom and brings sweets to the good children. On the evening of January 5, children hang large stockings on the chimney and she fills them at night with sweets: pralines and chocolate bars, candies, nuts and hazelnuts, snacks and tangerines. Small gifts, too. To the naughty children she brings coal instead.

Mom opens the door and we all go to the garden to greet the Befana. The cold wind blows my ears up and down.
«Mrs. Befana, you can’t be outside in this wind. Would you like to come inside? I’ll buy you a hot cup of tea!»
«My goodness, what a tragedy…what am I going to do now? Poor children!» keep saying the Befana as she enters the house.
«Please, have a seat» says Mom and points to a chair. Befana sits down and Mom goes to the kitchen to make tea. The Befana is wearing an old green coat, a brown scarf, and a witch’s hat.

Mom arrives with a tray with two cups of tea and some cookies.
«Mrs. Befana, tell me, what happened?»
«Tonight it is very difficult to fly, it is very windy! My bag fell off my broom and now I can’t find it!»
«Mrs. Befana, don’t worry! We will help you. Kira and Cody are sure to find the sack of sweets! Right?»
Of course!
«Thank you dear! So you’re helping not only me, but all the kids! Come on, let’s go!»

Befana finishes drinking her tea and gets up, ready to look for her sack.
Before she leaves, Mom puts on a nice warm coat, scarf, hat, and gloves, and also takes two flashlights.
«Now I’m ready. Let’s go!»

It is very dark and still very windy. We walk past the bakery, the library, and the small grocery store. We go to the square where the old church is. We turn right, we turn left, we go straight ahead…. Kira and I search everywhere. Dear sweets, where are you?

We walk to the woods. Wait a minute… I know that smell. It smells like chocolate! And I smell cookies, too! I bark and wag my tail in agitation.
«Cody found something!» exclaims Mom.
Kira and I run through the woods and come to a big oak tree. The sweets are on this tree! Mom and the Befana arrive as well. The Befana looks very tired and sits down.
«My darlings, I am not as young as you are…»
I lick her long nose. «Yes yes don’t worry, I’m fine. I just need to rest for a moment.»

Meanwhile, Mom looks at the tree, then points to a branch, «Look! The sack is up there!»
The sack is hanging on a branch and the wind is moving it left and right. Mom climbs the tree.
«My dear, be careful!» exclaims the Befana worried.
«Of course, don’t worry!»
Fortunately, Padroncina doesn’t fall. She picks up the sack, gets down from the tree and then gives it to the Befana.
«Thank you so much my dear!»
She then opens the sack, but… «The sweets are gone!»
«Oh no! That’s why it was so light…. Maybe they fell down nearby.»
How strange, the smell of sweets is coming from this big tree. I’m sure the sweets are here. But where?

On the ground I find a candy. Then a chocolate. I go to the other side of the big oak tree and see that there is a big hole in the trunk. Mom looks in the hole and finds…a squirrel! The squirrel is sleeping contentedly on top of all the candy.
The Befana bursts out laughing. «Good thing the squirrel doesn’t like chocolates and candy! He only ate the nuts and hazelnuts.»
We put all the candy in the big Befana sack. With some difficulty: the squirrel wanted to keep the candy as a bed to sleep on!

We go home and the Befana says us goodby.
«Dear friends, I don’t know how to thank you» says the Befana as she hugs us. «You have saved the Epiphany! Tomorrow morning all the children can wake up happy.»
«It was my pleasure! We had fun, didn’t we?»
Absolutely!
The Befana sits on her broom with her big sack full of sweets and flies off. Goodbye, Mrs. Befana!

Ding dong. Someone rings the doorbell. Yaaawn who is it?
It’s morning and sunlight comes in through the window. Kira opens her eyes, closes them and falls asleep again. Mom comes in still in her pajamas, looks out the window and then opens the door.
«Hi Edo! What are you doing here at this hour?»
«Good morning sleepyhead! It’s already noon and you invited me for lunch, remember?»
«Oh dear! It’s noon already!” exclaims Mom amazed and runs to the bathroom to wash and dress herself.

Buddy (Cody and I call him that because he’s our great friend) has brought a cammello and lays it on the table. The cammello is the traditional Epiphany dessert typical of Varese, the town where we live. It is called cammello because it has the shape of a camel! In fact, the Three Kings came to baby Jesus riding camels.
After a few minutes Mom returns to the living room. Buddy points to the fireplace.
«Have you seen the stockings yet? The Befana was very generous this year!»
In fact, our stockings are not full, but overflowing with sweets! We received lots of chocolates, candies, tangerines, and even some coal, because Befana’s coal is really good! But there are no nuts or hazelnuts…. I wonder why!

On the fireplace there are also three big presents. On one of them is written: Thank you for everything. Kira and I received two stuffed squirrels. Mom received… a broom! Is it a magic broom?
«Thank you for what?» asks Buddy and looks amused at the broom.
«Kira, Cody and I had a special adventure tonight, didn’t we?» she says and winks at us.
A very special adventure, I think as I satisfied eat a cookie. With a very special lady.

Buona Epifania a tutti!
