Story in Italian

È quasi mezzanotte

Prima parte

TRANSLATE

It‘s almost midnight. The alleys are already deserted. Here and there you can hear voices from the open windows. The air is still warm and a little humid even at night. The summer has been long this year. Soon autumn will begin and the weather will change.

But these things are not very important to the young woman who gets ready to go out secretly. She puts her tunic in order and puts on her leather shoes. She turns off the small lamp and slowly opens the rough wooden door so as not to make too much noise. She looks around and since she sees no one, she leaves. The streets are dark, but she finds her way even without light. She has to hurry, because she doesn‘t have much time. Her lover, her secret love, cannot wait for a long time. They must always meet in secret, because in ancient Rome it is forbidden for a woman to go out alone. The rules of the upper class are very strict. Usually she always leaves the house with a slave, but tonight she wants to be alone.

She turns a corner and already sees the house in the distance. She approaches and knocks on the door.
A voice can be heard, whispering: «Who is there?»
The woman answers: «It‘s me, my love.»
The door opens and two strong arms pull her into the room. A firm embrace between the two lovers and the sentences «I missed you…», «At last you’ve come…».
They don‘t have much time because they have to go home before their absence is discovered. After a few hugs and kisses they have to leave this secret place. They kiss one last time, exchange love vows and leave the house separately. They do not know yet when they will meet again. But they know that their love is strong.

Seconda parte

It’s almost midnight, but it’s raining tonight.

It has been raining for a couple of hours now. The young woman looks out the window. The sky is dark and the clouds are moving fast. The strong wind blows the rain into her room. She puts the curtains back in front of the window to keep everything from getting wet and returns to the table, where there is a lighted lamp. The light illuminates his thoughtful face.
She would like to sneak out to meet her lover, but in this weather it is impossible. When she returns she should change and lay her wet clothes out to dry, but her wet tunic would reveal that she has been sneaking out, and that would get her into trouble. No one must know that she goes out without permission.
Look at the lights and shadows dancing on the walls. The flame flickers because of the wind coming through the window, despite the heavy cloth curtains.
She thinks back to the last meeting with her lover. To the strong embraces. She gets goosebumps just thinking about it. They only saw each other a couple of days ago, but it seems like an eternity.

The sound of thunder interrupts her thoughts. A storm is all what I needed, she thinks. The hope that the weather will improve diminishes. The young woman gets up and begins walking back and forth across the room. She thinks back to their first meeting.

She was walking the streets of Rome with one of her slaves. She wanted to buy some fruit. She passed by a stall and stopped to look at the offering. Suddenly she heard the neighing of a horse. She turned around and saw a horse galloping quickly towards her. It was riderless and seemed out of control. Frightened, she covered her head with her arms. Her slave screamed. Then, out of nowhere, a boy appeared and grabbed the horse’s reins and stopped him, trying to calm him down.
«Are you all right, Miss?» he asked her.
The woman looked at him surprised. Where did he jump out from so quickly?
«Yes, thank you, I’m fine. I just got scared.»
The boy smiled at her, but then quickly looked away. Looking a woman directly in the eye is not allowed.
But those few seconds that the woman saw the boy’s beautiful eyes were enough for her to know that she wanted to see him again. The boy smiled at her again, greeted her, and returned the horse to its owner as the woman followed him with her eyes.

Another clap of thunder brought the woman back to reality. Thanks to her trusted slave, the young woman was able to find out who the boy was who saved her life – or at least prevented serious injury. The boy works in a bakery and had gone to deliver bread to an inn that day, but he had taken a different route than usual. He had been passing by the stalls when he had seen the horse that had gotten loose.

After that first encounter they had seen each other many times. Sometimes during the day, at the bakery. More often at night, in secret. But with this storm, she doubts she’ll be able to see him tonight.

With a sigh, she turns off the lamp and darkness envelops her.
