L'agrifoglio e l'uccellino

Traduzione

Winter is coming, the wind is cold and the trees have lost almost all their leaves. In the forest, all the birds move to warmer climes. Only one little bird remains, too young and too weak to make such a long journey.

It’s December and it’s snowing. The little bird is cold and hungry. His nest is not warm enough and he cannot find food. One day, when he is looking for something to eat, he comes to a cottage. Around the cottage there are many trees and plants. All but one of them have no leaves. This plant has green leaves and is full of red berries.

“Please,” says the little bird, “never lose your leaves and berries, or I will die of hunger and cold.”

The holly hears the bird’s prayer and turns to the . winter wind. The winter wind answers, “Don’t worry, I promise you that you will never lose your leaves and can be a shelter for this little bird until spring.”

And so, from that day on, the holly never loses its green leaves and red berries, helping the little birds to find food and shelter even in winter.
