The legend of the panettone

È la notte di Natale del 1495 e alla corte di Ludovico il Moro, a Milano, succede una tragedia: il cuoco dimentica il dolce natalizio nel forno! Il dolce è completamente bruciato e non ci sono gli ingredienti per farne un altro… Che cosa può fare?

Il suo aiutante, lo sguattero¹ Toni, guarda nella credenza²: sono rimasti solo farina, uova, burro, zucchero e un po’ di uva passa. Allora prende tutti gli ingredienti, forma un bell’impasto e poi lo mette nel forno. Tutti gli invitati sono davvero entusiasti del nuovo dolce!

E così nasce il pan del Toni, diventato poi il panettone.

Traduzione

On Christmas night in 1495, a tragedy occurs at the court of Ludovico il Moro in Milan: the cook forgets his Christmas cake in the oven! The cake is completely burnt and there are no ingredients for a new… What can he do?

His assistant, the kitchen boy Toni, looks in the cupboard: there is only flour, eggs, butter, sugar and a few raisins left. So he takes all the ingredients, forms a nice dough and puts it in the oven. All the guests are delighted with the new cake!

Thus was born the Pan del Toni, which later became the Panettone.
