Italian Christmas Story

Altri giocano a carte.
«Oh no!

Verso mezzanotte tutti escono.

«Buona notte Kira, buona notte Cody, sogni d‘oro!» Sogni d‘oro, Padroncina! penso e mi addormento serena.

«Ecciù!»

Mi sveglio di nuovo. Sono le tre. Adesso che succede? Voglio dormire!
È alto e corpulento e indossa vestiti rossi e bianchi.
«Ora scusatemi, devo lavorare» dice Babbo Natale e mette alcuni regali sotto l‘albero.

Fantastico, ho incontrato Babbo Natale!
Babbo Natale, dove sei?

Cody guarda in basso e sembra preoccupato.
«Mmh. La slitta non cade, vero?»
Babbo Natale ride. «Non preoccuparti, la mia slitta è sicurissima!»
Infine ci riporta a casa.
«Ecciù! Arrivederci amici. Grazie ancora e buon Natale!

Poi tutti iniziano a scartare i regali.
«Babbo Natale ci ha portato tanti regali! Kira, Cody, questi sono per voi». Cody ed io scartiamo i nostri regali: giocattoli nuovi. Evviva! Grazie mille!

E… E…. Eeecciiùù!
Oh no!

Buon Natale a tutti

It’s Christmas Eve. It’s evening, it’s cold and it’s snowing. But in the house there is a warm and cheerful atmosphere. The fireplace is lit and there is Christmas music. In the living room there is a beautiful Christmas tree and a large crib. From the kitchen comes a delicious smell.

The house is full of people. The whole family is there: my Mom, her mom and dad, her brother and his girlfriend, grandparents, uncles and even cousins. They sit at the table and have dinner. But it is not a simple dinner: it is the big dinner on Christmas Eve. This is perhaps the most important dinner of the year!

In fact, this is not really the whole family: it’s the maternal family. Tomorrow we meet with the paternal family for the typical Christmas lunch. And on Santo Stefano we have lunch with some friends. Yes, at Christmas we always eat a lot!

«Let’s make a toast!» says the father and raises the glass of sparkling wine.
Everybody raises his glass and says: «Cheers!», «Merry Christmas!», «Best wishes!»

As per tradition, the dinner is based on fish. They chose traditional recipes, but also simple to prepare. The starter is salmon, as first dish spaghetti with clams and as second dish baked fish.
Cody and I are under the table and waiting. Sometimes Mom gives us a piece of fish or bread… but after a while I go to play with the ball with the younger cousins. It’s fun!
«Mamma mia, I’m full!» says Mom at the end.
«All very good, good Francy!» says Uncle Claudio to Padroncina’s mother.
«Really delicious! You must give me the recipe for the baked fish» says aunt Kerstin, the German aunt.
At the end comes the dessert: panettone and pandoro, the traditional Christmas desserts.

Grandma sits on the sofa and turns on the TV. On Italia 1 there is the classic Christmas Eve movie that airs every year, Trading places. Others play cards. They play Scopa (lit. broom), grandpa’s favorite game. Even if grandpa gets angry every time… But they don’t play cards for a long time, because Mom’s dad starts distributing cards with numbers to play Tombola! It’s a game of luck similar to bingo and everyone, but especially the smaller cousins, hope to do Tombola to win the biggest and most beautiful gift. But this year it’s Mom’s brother who first covered all his numbers!
«Tombola!» he shouts happily waving the card. What luck!
«Oh no! I was only missing two numbers!» complains Mom.

Around midnight everyone goes out. On December 24, many people go to church and attend midnight Mass. After Mass they all meet in the square, drink mulled wine and wish each other a Merry Christmas.
Cody and I stay at home and wait for Mom. But I have played a lot and I am very tired. I close my eyes. zzZZZZ

I wake up. It’s half past one. Mom opens the door and enters together with her family. Welcome back, Mom! Cody and I get up and go to her. She greets us and then takes off her coat, scarf, hat, gloves and boots – it’s very cold outside! Then she goes to the bathroom and brushes her teeth. Finally she puts on her pajamas and goes to bed.
«Good night Kira, good night Cody, sweet dreams!»
Sweet dreams, Mom! I think and fall asleep serenly.

«Achoo!»

I wake up again. It’s three o’clock. Now what is happening? I want to sleep! But there is someone close to the Christmas tree. I can’t believe it, it’s Santa Claus!
«Cody, wake up! It’s Santa Claus!» I bark enthusiastically.
«Ho ho ho ho! Good evening, beautiful doggies!» says Santa Claus. «Achoo! Oh, excuse me, unfortunately I have a cold! It’s not easy to work with a cold. Here, these are for you» and he gives a cookie to me and one to Cody. How kind, thank you very much!
Santa Claus is an old man and has white beard and hair. He is tall and burly and wears red and white clothes.
«Now excuse me, I have to work» says Santa Claus and puts some presents under the tree. Then he drinks the milk and eats the cookies that Mom left on the table for him.
Finally he goes towards the fireplace.
«Goodbye friends, it was a pleasure to meet you! Achoo! Keep on being good doggies!» and then he disappears as if by magic.

Fantastic, I met Santa Claus! Now there are many presents under the tree: for Cody, for Padroncina, for me and… for Romeo? But no Romeo lives here!
«Cody!» I say worried, «Santa has made a mistake! Look, this present is not for us!”
«Hurry, we must go immediately to Santa Claus!» says Cody. He goes to the door and with his paw he lowers the handle. The door opens! Mom forgot to lock the door… What luck!
Cody and I run into the garden and bark. Santa Claus, where are you?
Then I hear the sound of bells. On the roof of our house there are reindeer and a beautiful sleigh. Wow.
«What’s going on?» asks Santa surprised.
I show him the present. Santa reads the name Romeo.
«Gosh, am such a bungler! Thanks to you, Tomcat Romeo  won’t be left without a present, thank you very much! Come, let’s take a ride on my sleigh! It’s my special gift for you.

And so Cody and I get on the sleigh and take a beautiful ride.
The view is wonderful, but it’s also very cold up here… That’s why Santa has a cold!
Cody looks down and looks worried. I don’t know whether he is shivering from the cold or from fear…
«Cody, are you all right?» I ask him.
«Hmm. The sleigh doesn’t fall, does it?»
Santa laughs. «Don’t worry, my sleigh is very safe!»
Finally he takes us home.
«Achoo! Goodbye, friends. Thanks again and Merry Christmas! Ho ho ho!» says Santa Claus, then he flies into the sky with his magic sleigh and the reindeers. Goodbye, Santa Claus! Merry Christmas to you too!
Wow, what an adventure! Now I’m really tired. I enter the house, go to my bed and fall asleep right away.

Hmm, what time is it? It’s half past 8:00 and Mom is already awake and making a hot tea.
«Good morning, sleepyhead!» says Mom in a good mood.
The rest of the family is also up. They drink tea or coffee, but don’t have a real breakfast. Yesterday they ate a lot and afterwards we go to the paternal grandparents for the typical Christmas lunch and they will eat a lot again.
Then everyone starts unwrapping presents.
«Santa brought us lots of presents! Kira, Cody, these are for you.»
Cody and I unwrap our presents: new toys. Hurray! Thanks a lot!

Finally, we get ready to go out: Mom takes a shower, puts on a very pretty dress, combs her hair and puts on some make-up.
Then we go out and Mom locks the door. Ah! This time she hasn’t forgotten! I think amused.
I wonder what grandparents have cooked. Perhaps the capon broth and the stuffed capon, as per tradition? Or did grandma make her delicious lasagna and grandpa his classic roast? I don’t know yet, but it will certainly be delicious, I have no doubt! Grandparents are really good cooks.

Ah… Ah…. Achoo!
Oh no! I have a cold!
But never mind, it was worth it.

Merry Christmas to all!
