Capitolo 1

KIRA

Aiutatemi a toglierlo! ho abbaiato.

Ma la mia voce non era più la mia voce. Stavo miagolando. Mao!

It all started one cold and cloudy February afternoon.
Mom was in the kitchen making chiacchiere, a typical Carnival pastry. I was in the living room, looking out the window and occasionally barking. Woof!
Cody was lying in front of the fireplace and sleeping.

I was watching the neighbor’s cat when I heard a noise coming from upstairs. Was there maybe a burglar in the house?
I went upstairs and entered the bedroom. Nothing. Then I went into the bathroom and…found it! The window was open and banging against the wall because it was windy outside. Well, mystery solved. No burglar.

I was about to go back downstairs when I saw something strange in the guest room. In the middle of the room was a ladder. I had never seen that ladder before. I was very curious so I went up it. The ladder led up to the attic. I had never been up here before.
The attic was very big and quite dark, there was only a small window in the corner. I started to walk towards that window, but I tripped over a box. Ouch, that hurt!
The lid of the box fell to the ground. Inside was…what was it? It looked like a dress.

I looked closely: it was a cat costume. It looked very old. It had pointed ears, a long tail, whiskers… a real cat!
It’s perfect for Carnival! I thought excited. Mom wanted to go see the Carnival parade in town on Saturday.

All of a sudden, the costume started moving on its own and… after a few seconds I was wearing it. I was wearing the costume! How was that even possible? Startled, I ran out of there. What had happened? I was feeling weird. I ran downstairs to Cody and Mom. Help!
Cody jumped up and started barking. Mom said: «A cat! Where did you come from?»
But can’t you see it’s a costume? Help me take it off! I barked.

But my voice wasn’t my voice anymore. I was meowing. Meow!

Capitolo 2

KIRA

Ero senza parole.

Me lei non mi vedeva. Lei vedeva solo un gatto. Anche Cody non mi riconosceva. Mi guardava diffidente.
«Hai fame, piccolo?
Oh no!

Why couldn’t they see I was wearing a costume? And what had happened to my voice?
Scared, I ran into the bedroom and looked at myself in the mirror. In front of me was not my reflection. I didn’t see a dog wearing a cat costume. No, in front of me was a real live cat, a beautiful tiger cat with pointy ears and whiskers. I was speechless. This must be a nightmare…

I didn’t know what to do. I slowly walked back to the living room. Maybe they can see that I’m not a real cat, maybe Cody can smell me…
Mom came over to me with a smile. «You must be the neighbor’s new cat» she said to me. «You came in through the bathroom window, didn’t you? I forgot to close it.»
Take a good look at me, Mom, can’t you see it’s me, your Kira?
Me she did not see me. She could only see a cat. Cody didn’t recognize me either. He looked at me wary.
«Are you hungry, little one? Come with me, I have some dog kibble here.»
Mom went to the kitchen and put some kibble in a small bowl.
«Kitty, are you hungry? I have some food here! Come!»
But I didn’t listen to her. Instead, I was thinking about what to do. I need to find a solution as quickly as possible.
«Kitty kitty kitty! Come here!»
But what can I do? Who can help me?
«Kitty, come!»
Mom, stop calling me, I have to think!
A moment! I always went to Mom when she called me! I was an obedient dog, me! What was happening to me? And then I realized: not only did I look like a cat, but I was also acting like a cat! Oh no! The problem was really serious.

Then an idea came to me. He was probably the only person who could help me. I laid down on the floor and started meowing loudly, rolling left and right.
«What’s the matter, kitty? Are you sick?» asked Mom worried. «I need to let your owner know right away!»
But I started meowing louder. She then changed her mind: she grabbed the car keys and quickly took me to the vet.

Capitolo 3

KIRA

«Dici a me?» gli ho chiesto.
Oddio!
È entrato in casa e all’improvviso si è sentito male.»
«Povero micino.»
«No, non abito qui, abito a Roma.
«Devo andare. Mi ha fatto piacere conoscerti!»
«Anche a me, ciao!»
Uff, meno male…

Disperata, ho iniziato a piangere.

I really didn’t like the idea of going to the vet, but he was probably the only person who could help me. At least, I hoped so.
Mom rushed in and explained the situation to the reception girl, then we waited in the waiting room.
«Hey beauty» said a voice.
Next to me was a large red cat inside a carrier. It was on the lap of a girl with violet hair.
«Are you talking to me?» I asked him.
The cat smiled at me. «Of course I’m talking to you, my beauty. How about we take a walk together tonight? You and me, in the moonlight…»
Oh my! A cat was flirting with me! «I’m sorry, I don’t…»
At that moment the girl stroked me. «What a cute kitty!»
«Thank you» replied Mom, «but it’s not mine, I think it’s my neighbor’s. He came into the house and suddenly felt sick.»
«Poor kitty.»
«I’ve never seen you, did you just move in?» asked Mom. The village is small and she knows practically everyone.
«No, I don’t live here, I live in Rome. I came to visit a friend. But this morning Romeo didn’t eat and I got worried, he always eats. It feels warm, maybe he has a fever.»
«Miss Albachiara!» called a veterinarian.
«I have to go. It was nice meeting you!»
«For me too, bye!»
Phew, good thing… I didn’t like cats, even now. After five minutes it was our turn. The vet examined me, tested my fever, looked at my teeth, ears and eyes… Nothing. To him, I was a simple, healthy cat.

As we drove home, I was already imagining my future life as a street cat, away from Mom and Cody. I couldn’t stay with them in cat form… But what would Mom do? Was she going to get another dog? That thought made me sick.

Desperate, I started to cry.

Capitolo 4

CODY

I heard the sound of the car and went to the door. There was something important I needed to tell Mom. Something terrible had happened. Mom, Kira is missing! I barked. She had that strange cat with her and laid it on the floor. Then she noticed that Kira hadn’t come to the door to greet her. Concerned, she started to call her, but Kira wasn’t coming.

The cat began to meow desperately. What did that cat want? It was weird. But that didn’t matter now. I had already been looking for Kira everywhere while Mom was away, so I took her upstairs to the attic where Kira’s smell was strongest. I took her to where there was a big empty box. That was where Kira’s smell ended. Mom looked around a bit and then noticed something in the box. A letter. It looked very old.

Mom read it aloud:

January 28, 1891

Dear Anna,

I am sending you the costume with the spell you asked for. Remember not to wear it too long, or you will start to believe that you are really a cat. Water cancels the spell, so take a bath when you want to take it off. Don’t use it if it’s raining.
Use it with caution.

Your friend Amelia

Mom stared at the letter for a good minute, then hurried back downstairs. Evidently Kira had found that costume, put it on, and… turned into a cat? That strange cat then… was Kira? It was unbelievable, but it explained why that cat was in our house. Luckily, the letter also said how to reverse the spell. All it took was a bath. The thought made me laugh… Kira hated taking baths.

But my smile faded quickly. The cat was no longer in the house. Our search ended in front of the open bathroom window.

Capitolo 5

KIRA

«Hey bellezza!»
«Lasciami in pace.»
Cosa aveva detto quella ragazza?

The sun was setting and I didn’t know where to go. It was cold and I wasn’t used to sleeping outside. I jumped onto the low wall of a stone bridge and sat down. Below me was a river.

«Hey beauty!»
Romeo, the red cat I had met at the vet, came over and sat down next to me.
«Leave me alone.» I really didn’t feel like talking.
«That bad temper doesn’t suit a pretty kitty like you.»
Next to me, I could feel that Romeo was very hot. What had that girl said? That maybe Romeo had a fever?
«I’m not a kitten» I said angrily.
He burst out laughing. «What are you then? A tiger?»
«I’m a dog! A DOG! I’m trapped in a DAMNED COSTUME!»

At that moment a dog barked right behind us. It freaked me out a bit, although I certainly wasn’t afraid of a dog… Thankfully, he and his owner left quickly.

I turned to Romeo, but he…was gone! Where had he gone? I looked down and there he was, in the river. But the current was very strong and he seemed to be in trouble.

I jumped into the river without a second thought. The water was freezing cold. I looked for Romeo. I didn’t know how to save him, since I was a cat and he was bigger than me, but I had to try. Then, I finally saw him. I reached out and grabbed him on the back of the neck. The shore was too steep, so I swam with all my might to a large rock.

With effort I climbed up and then pulled Romeo up too, who had his eyes closed and was not moving. I was very worried about him and started calling for help.

I was so agitated and worried that I didn’t realize I was barking and not meowing. I called for help for ten long minutes.

But finally someone came. Mom and Cody rescued us.

Epilogo

CODY

P.S. Chi era la donna della lettera? Era forse una bis-bisnonna di Padroncina? E aveva una strega per amica? E perché mai aveva voluto avere quel costume?

Mom and I were looking for Kira when we heard barking in the distance. I immediately recognized Kira’s voice. We found her on a large rock in the middle of the river along with a cat that wasn’t moving. She was soaking wet and it was her again, the Kira I knew. We ran to the river and helped them out. The cat, thankfully, wasn’t dead, but it was unconscious. We took them to the vet right away. Kira was fine, she just needed to warm up a bit. The cat, on the other hand, was not doing so well. He had a high fever.

The cat’s owner came running and couldn’t stop thanking Kira and Mom for saving her Romeo. She said that Romeo was very afraid of dogs, «but maybe now that he’s been saved by a dog of all people, he’ll be less afraid!» she said happy. When he woke up, Romeo stared at Kira for a long time. Then he meowed something, perhaps in thanks. Kira, in response, licked his ear.

We came home and that evening Mom, Kira and I had lots of cuddles on the couch. Kira was happy and very tired and fell asleep almost immediately in Mom’s arms. We didn’t go to see the Carnival parade in town on Saturday. Mom preferred to spend a quiet day with us. Neither Kira, nor Mom, nor I felt like wearing a costume.

Kira told me everything that had happened: about when she had found the costume, which was now probably somewhere at the bottom of the river, about the courtship of that cat (at which point I really laughed a lot) up to a detailed description of the rescue. Kira was convinced that she had become a dog again thanks to her heroic act, like the heroes in fairy tales who break the evil queen’s spell thanks to love, selflessness and the like. Kira was so proud that I didn’t want to tell her the truth. But what did it matter? To me she was a true heroine.

P.S. Who was the woman in the letter? Was she perhaps a great-great-grandmother of Mom? And did she have a witch for a friend? And why had she ever wanted to have that costume? Maybe she loved cats so much that sometimes she wanted to live like them. Or maybe she was a superheroine who turned into a cat, like Catwoman. Who knows!
