Capitolo 1

KIRA

La polizia sta ancora cercando i ladri. Hanno già rubato tantissimi agnelli. Perché? Dove li portano?

Cody dorme. Poi Padroncina guarda l‘orologio. Sono le tre meno un quarto. Spegne la TV e si alza.
«Kira, Cody, venite! Dovete indossare i vostri costumi.»
Costumi?

Mancano pochi giorni a Pasqua.

«Ale, come stanno i tuoi animali?»
«Non so se avete visto il telegiornale… Gli agnelli…» risponde lui triste.
«Oh no!

All’improvviso sento una voce.

Police are still looking for the thieves. They have already stolen so many lambs. Why? Where are they taking them? There are no answers yet…

Mom is watching TV and seems very concerned. Cody and I are on the couch with her. Cody is asleep. Then Mom looks at the clock. It’s a quarter to three. She turns off the TV and gets up.
«Kira, Cody, come on! You must put on your costumes.»
Costumes? But why?
We go to the bedroom and after ten minutes we’re ready – Cody is wearing a rabbit costume and I’m wearing a lamb costume. Mom puts on her shoes and then we all go out together. Where are we’re going?

Outside is Buddy, our great friend. He is waiting for us in front of his car. It is a beautiful day. It is sunny and warm. Easter is just a few days away. We all get into the car and go to our friend, the dog Leo, who lives in a big farm together with his dad Alessandro. When we arrive, I see that there are many other friends and everyone is wearing a costume. It’s a party!

«How old is Leo turning?» asks Mom to Alessandro.
«Three years old. He’s still young and full of energy!» he replies.
«Happy birthday! You had a great idea: a costume birthday party!»
«Thank you! Kira and Cody look really cute in their costumes.»

It’s a beautiful party. The humans chat and we play. The farm is very big, there is a big lawn, a field and lots of animals: chickens, cows and sheep. There is also a donkey.
Mom and Buddy sit at the table with Alessandro and eat a piece of cake.
«Ale, how are your animals?»
«I don’t know if you’ve seen the news…. The lambs…» he replies sadly.
«Oh no, did they steal your lambs too?»
«Unfortunately yes.»

Meanwhile, I see a beautiful butterfly. It is blue and yellow. I like butterflies. The butterfly flies across the lawn and I follow it to the fence. Beyond the fence is a small forest. Suddenly I hear a voice. It’s coming from the woods. I see that the fence has a hole in it. I go through it and into the woods. After a while, behind a bush, I see a lamb.
«Thank goodness! Help me, please!» he says.
«Sure, but… what happened?»
He looks around worriedly. «I don’t have time to answer. They’re chasing me! But I hurt myself and I can’t walk…. Can you help me? I’m almost there…»
«Sure! But you’re too heavy… Wait here, I’ll go get help.»
«Alright, but make it quick!», then he looks at me closely. «But you’re not a lamb. What are you?»
«I’m a dog. This is just a costum-»
«A-ha! I’ve found you!»
What’s going on? Who is he? But in that moment I feel a great pain and everything goes black.

Capitolo 2

KIRA

AhiaPerché mi fa male la testa?

Apro gli occhi. Mi trovo in un posto molto strano. È sporco, buio e… è pieno di agnelli.
«Ah, sei sveglia, meno male!» dice un agnello. «Piacere, io sono Benny.»
«Dove…
Mi guardo in giro.
Ti aiuto io a tornare a casa.»

L‘altro è alto, magro e calvo. Anche lui indossa dei vestiti sporchi. Quello grasso ha in mano un grosso sacco. Lo apre e tira fuori… un agnello.
«Ecco, questo è l’ultimo. Abbiamo abbastanza agnelli. Il capo è sicuramente soddisfatto. Andiamo a prepararci.

Dobbiamo tornare a casa!»

Siamo pronti.

Ouch… Why does my head hurt?

I open my eyes. I am in a very strange place. It’s dirty, dark and… full of lambs.
«Ah, you’re awake, thank goodness!» says a lamb. «Nice to meet you, I’m Benny.»
«Where… where am I?»
«I’m so sorry» he says. «It’s my fault you’re here now, in this horrible place.»
I remember now.
«Of course, you’re the lamb I met in the woods! What happened?»
«I ran away, but the men found me. And they found you, too. You look like a lamb…»
I’m actually still wearing my costume. I look around. I am the only dog. There are only lambs in this room, and lots of them.
«But why are we here?»
«I don’t know… I just want to go home to my mom and my friends Leo and Alexander» he says sadly.
«Don’t worry, Benny. I’ll help you get home.»

Suddenly, the door opens and two men walk in. One is short and fat. He has short black hair and a black beard. He is wearing a T-shirt, dirty jeans, and rubber boots. The other is tall, thin, and bald. He is also wearing dirty clothes. The fat one is holding a large sack. He opens it and pulls out…a lamb.
«Here, this is the last one. We have enough lambs. The chief is certainly satisfied. Let’s go get ready. We’ve got a lot to do.»
As they leave, one of them asks, «Did you clean the knives?»
Then the door closes. Silence.

«Guys, we have to do something» I say after a while. «We have to find a way out. We have to get home!»
«But there’s no way out… After Benny escaped, they even increased security» says a lamb.
«Then we have to run when they come in. When they come in, we run out the door. There are many of us, there are only two of them!»
«She’s right!» says a voice.
«We must rebel!» says another voice.
«All for one, one for all!» shouts I.
«ALL FOR ONE, ONE FOR ALL!» all the lambs yell.

We are ready.

Capitolo 3

CODY

Kira è scomparsa. Dove sei, Kira? Dove sei, Kira? Sono molto preoccupato. Cammino nel bosco tra gli alberi. All’improvviso, cado. Cado in un tunnel. Aiuto!

«Andiamo a salvare Kira!» dice infine.
Usciamo e andiamo in giardino.
«Come la troviamo? Sai dov‘è?» gli chiedo.
«Io so sempre dov‘è chi crede in me. E Kira crede in me, lo so. A proposito, bel costume! Sei un mio fan?» E mi fa l‘occhiolino.
Io arrossisco.
Dopo pochi secondi li riapre.
«L‘ho trovata.»

Kira has disappeared. Where are you, Kira? Why aren’t you coming back? Mom and Buddy are looking for her with the car. I stayed at the farm. I run on the meadow here and there. After a while I notice a hole in the fence. Where are you, Kira? I am very worried. I walk in the woods between the trees. Suddenly, I fall. I fall into a tunnel. Help!

I open my eyes and…I can’t believe my eyes. I see a green meadow with lots of colorful flowers, a river with fish, an elegant bridge, and a cute little house. On the meadow there are so many eggs. Blue eggs, yellow eggs, red eggs, green eggs, pink eggs, purple eggs…. Eggs of all colors! I walk towards the house. Someone is singing. The door is open. I walk in.
Sitting at a large table is the Easter Bunny. In one hand he has a paintbrush, in the other an egg.
«Hi! Do you want to help me paint the eggs?» he asks me cheerfully.
But I have a better idea.

Pasquale, the Easter Bunny, is a very large rabbit. He is brown and white, has long ears and black eyes. He is nice and kind. But now he is very serious. He goes to the basement, gets a sturdy slingshot and a brown belt full of colored eggs. Then he puts a headband on his forehead.
«Let’s go save Kira!» he finally says.
We walk out and into the garden.
«How do we find her? Do you know where she is?» I ask him.
«I always know where those who believe in me are. And Kira believes in me, I know it. By the way, nice costume! Are you a fan of mine?» And he winks at me.
I blush. I feel a little ridiculous in this bunny costume.
Then Pasquale closes his eyes and concentrates.
After a few seconds he opens them again.
«I found her.»

Capitolo 4

KIRA

Tutti guardiamo la porta e aspettiamo. Passano i secondi. I minuti.
Poi sentiamo dei passi e delle voci.
Arrivano.
La porta si apre. I due uomini stanno parlando.
«… lavoriamo tutta la notte, d‘accordo?» sta dicendo l‘uomo basso e grasso.
«ALL’ATTACCO!»
Quei coltelli fanno paura anche a me.

«Grande, Pasquale!» dice Cody.
«Brutto cagnaccio. Come osi…»
Pasquale intanto apre un tunnel nel pavimento. «Forza, tutti nel tunnel! Veloci!»

We all look at the door and wait. Seconds pass by. Minutes.
Then we hear footsteps and voices.
They come.
The door opens. The two men are talking.
«…Let’s work all night, shall we?» the short, fat man is saying.
«ATTACK!»
I run to the door and bark aggressively. The lambs run after me. The men are very scared and move away from the door. We walk out. The hallway is long and there are many doors.
Where is the exit? I turn right, then left, then right again. At the end of the hallway there is a door, but it is closed. We stop.
«Let’s try to open it!»
Together we try to open the door. But nothing, the door won’t open.
«What do we do now?»
«Where do you want to go, eh, you ugly beasts?!» says a voice behind us.
The men are very angry. They are holding something gray, long and sharp. Big knives.
The lambs are shaking with fear. They are not very brave, the lambs. But I understand them. Those knives scare me, too.

«Hey you, chicken brain!» shouts a voice.
«Who? What?»
There is a small explosion and the man falls to the ground like a sack of potatoes.
And then, I see them: Cody and… the Easter Bunny!
«Great, Pasquale!» says Cody.
The Easter Bunny is holding a sling and eggs. They must be egg bombs! We’re saved!
The other man wants to hit Pasquale with the knife, but Cody bites his leg.
«You dirty dog. How dare you…»
Pasquale meanwhile opens a tunnel in the floor. «Come on, everyone in the tunnel! Quick!»
The lambs jump into the tunnel one by one. I run to Cody.
Both men are really furious and come towards us with knives in their hands. Uh-oh.
But Pasquale is not afraid. He looks at the tunnel. All the lambs are safe. So he grabs all his egg bombs and prepare the slingshot.
«On the count of three, jump into the tunnel. One, two, THREE!»
Cody and I jump, while I hear a loud explosion behind me.

Capitolo 5

KIRA

Poi vedono me e Cody.

«Kira! I can’t believe it’s really you! You’re safe and sound!» she says through tears and gives me one, two, three kisses. I’m happy to see you too! But don’t exaggerate…
Pasquale comes out of the tunnel and then closes it.
«That’s it, those two scoundrels got a good lesson.»
Everyone looks at him surprised.
«You’re… the Easter Bunny? You saved Kira and the lambs?» says Buddy finally.
«Only thanks Cody» he says. «Besides, Kira was very brave too. A true heroine.»
Mom goes to him and hugs him. «Thank you! Thank you for everything!»
He blushes embarrassed.
«Call the police. They need to arrest the two thieves and their boss. I can accompany them to them. They are surely unconscious now. My egg bombs are very effective» he says with a grin.
Mom takes out her cell phone and dials the police number.

«What do we do with all these lambs?» asks Buddy to Alessandro.
«We take them home» he replies. «And if they don’t have a home, they can stay here with us.»
I wonder how many there are? I think and start counting them.

Epilogo

DAL DIARIO DI KIRA

Pasqua 2019

BUONA PASQUA!

Pasquale è davvero adorabile! Spero di incontrarlo ancora…

FROM KIRA’S DIARY

Easter 2019

Dear diary, what an adventure! There were 100 lambs. Plus one: me! 101 lambs, like the famous Dalmatians.

Today is Easter. The Easter Bunny was very generous: Cody and I found lots of eggs in the garden! Then we had lunch at Alessandro’s, who made a really delicious lunch. For dessert there was Colomba, a dove-shaped cake typical of Easter. Tomorrow, on Easter Monday, we are having a picnic in the park. But something quiet, just Padroncina, Amicone, Cody and me. I’ve had enough adventures for now!

HAPPY EASTER!

Pasquale is really adorable! I hope to meet him again…
