«Ciao! Tutto bene? Hai bisogno di aiuto?», poi mi presento: «Mi chiamo Rocky, abito qui vicino.»
«Piacere, io sono Fiocco*. Sì, sto abbastanza bene, grazie. Io… io volevo solo aiutare Babbo Natale…»
«Che cosa? Conosci Babbo Natale?» gli chiedo emozionato.
«Sì, certo! Vengo dal Polo Nord.»
«Caspita!
«Ma no, mi dispiace! Ti sei fatto male?»
«Sto bene, grazie. Solo la gamba mi fa un po’ male… Ho anche molto freddo… e molta fame.»
«Vieni con me, ti porto a casa. Lì puoi mangiare qualcosa, scaldarti e riposarti.

Poi Babbo Natale guarda me.

«Rocky, svegliati! Facciamo una passeggiata!»
Mi sveglio all’improvviso e mi guardo in giro sorpreso.

Ti voglio bene!
Buon natale,
il tuo Fiocco

Felice, mi alzo e vado da Padroncina.
Grazie a te Fiocco! Non ti dimenticherò mai. Buon Natale anche a te.

It’s a very cold December morning and Mom and I take a long, beautiful walk in the woods. There are so many interesting smells: smell of other dogs, of boar, of mouse, of deer…. But then I smell something I don’t know and I follow it. I am a very curious dog!

Padroncina shouts my name. I am usually an obedient dog, but the smell is really interesting! I go through a bush and then stop, because I find something…. It looks like a deer, but it’s not exactly a deer. It’s a reindeer.

The reindeer is shivering and looks very tired.
«Hi! Are you okay? Do you need any help?» then I introduce myself, «My name is Rocky, I live nearby.»
«Nice to meet you, I’m Fiocco. Yeah, I’m pretty good, thanks. I…I just wanted to help Santa…»
«What? You know Santa?» I ask him excited.
«Yes, of course! I’m from the North Pole.»
«Wow! And why are you here? What happened?»
«I wanted to pull the sleigh like the big reindeer…. But Santa said I’m still too small. I have to wait until next year, when I’m big and strong. But I hid in the sleigh. This morning Santa left for Italy to visit Befana, his witch friend. Unfortunately, it was very windy, the sleigh was moving left and right…and I ended up falling into this bush.»
«But no, I’m sorry! Did you hurt yourself?»
«I’m fine, thank you. Just my leg hurts a little…. I’m also very cold… and very hungry.»
«Come with me, I’ll take you home. There you can eat something, get warm and rest. Then we’ll figure out a way to get you home.»

So I go back to Mom along with Fiocco. She is very amazed, but then she sees that Fiocco is limping and we all go home together.
A real Santa’s reindeer in our house! I think excited.
Mom gives Fiocco some carrots and a nice warm blanket. While Fiocco rests, I think about how to get him back home, to the North Pole. He definitely misses his parents….
«Don’t you have a way to call Santa?» I ask him.
«Yes, of course, but I can only call him on December 24. Look: this little bell on my collar is a special bell. On Christmas Eve it becomes a magic bell. I can call Santa Claus on that day. My mom calls it the Magic of Christmas. But until the 24th what do I do?» he asks sad. Today is the 20th of December.
«Don’t worry, you can stay with us until Christmas Eve! Then you call Santa and he’ll bring you home.»
«Really? Thank you, you’re very kind!»
His leg has healed, so we take many walks together, play games, watch TV, and eventually became true friends.

Christmas Eve comes and I am very excited to meet Santa.
«Fiocco, are you going to call Santa now?” I ask him impatient.
«Yes, I’ll try!»
Fiocco thinks very hard about his house and calls Santa with his thoughts.
«Look, the bell is shining!»

Fiocco and I look fascinated at the bell. But after a few seconds it goes off. We wait and wait…but nothing happens. So Fiocco and I take a nap. Suddenly we wake up because we hear a loud noise on the roof. We immediately understand: Santa Claus has arrived! Mom is taking a shower and she didn’t hear anything.

Fiocco and I go out. It’s really him: tall, with a white beard and a big belly.
«Oh oh oh! Fiocco, what have you been up to? You know you’re still too small to fly!» he scolds him. Very sad, Fiocco lowers his ears.

Then Santa looks at me. «Rocky, thank you for taking care of Fiocco. You are a good dog and a true friend to him.»
And then he pats me with his big hand. I am very happy and proud. Fiocco hugs me goodbye and then jumps into Santa’s arms. After a few seconds they both disappear.

«Rocky, wake up! Let’s take a walk!»
I suddenly wake up and look around surprised. It was just a dream, I think. But then I get up and notice a bell in my bed. Under the bell is a note:

Thank you so much for everything. I love you!

Merry Christmas,
your Fiocco

Happy, I get up and go to Mom.
Thanks to you Fiocco! I will never forget you. Merry Christmas to you too.
