Passato prossimo con LO, LA, LI, LE e NENuovo

When the passato prossimo is formed with avere, the ending remains unchanged to -o: lei ha mangiato la pizza. But there is an exception… namely with the direct pronouns!

Passato Prossimo con lo, la, li, le + ne

When the pronouns lo, la, li, le and also ne precede the passato prossimo, the ending of the past participle is approximated in gender and number, e.g. mangiato, mangiata, mangiati, mangiate. In addition, the pronouns lo and la are apostrophized to l’. By the verb ending -o or -a one can recognize then whether it concerns lo or la! In the plural is never apostrophized.

l’ho mangiato (lo + ho)
l’ho mangiata (la + ho)
le ho mangiate
li ho mangiati

With ne, the ending of the participle refers to the reference object:
Quanti caffè hai bevuto? Ne ho bevuti due. (due caffè)
Quanti caffè hai bevuto? Ne ho bevuto uno. (un caffè)

Hai già bevuto il caffè? – Sì, l’ho già bevuto.Have you had your coffee yet? – Yes, I already drank it.
Dove hai comprato questa bella borsa? – L’ho comprata a Milano.Where did you buy this beautiful bag? – I bought it in Milan.
Hai già assaggiato i cannoli siciliani? Sono deliziosi! – No, non li ho ancora assaggiati.Have you tried Sicilian cannoli yet? They are delicious! – No, I haven’t tasted them yet.
Hai preso le chiavi? – Oh no, le ho dimenticate a casa!Did you take the keys? – Oh no, I forgot them at home!
Quante cartoline hai comprato? – Ne ho comprate tre.How many postcards did you buy? – I bought three.

Passato Prossimo con mi, ti, ci, vi

The other direct pronouns mi, ti, ci and vi can also influence the verb ending. In this case, both variants are possible and correct. For example, when talking to a woman, we can say both ieri ti ho visto al bar and ieri ti ho vista al bar.
