Articulated prepositions

+8

In Italian there are nine prepositions: di, a, da, in, con, su, per, tra, fra. Most of them can combine with the article, i.e. a + il = al. The rule is very simple! Learn the articulated prepositions in Italian.

Articulated prepositions in Italian

Vengo dalla Germania.

Often when you speak Italian you’ll need to use both a preposition and an article. In this case you should merge the two of them creating a so-called articulated preposition (preposizione articolata). For example:

Il gatto è sul tavolo. The cat is on the table.
Vengo dalla Germania.I come from [the] Germany.

To create an articulated preposition you only have to combine the preposition with an article. This is not particularly difficult since both the prepositions and the articles remain very recognizable and the endings for the same article are always the same. Look at the tables:

Also con can be combined with the article, but it’s not a must. Con can only be combined with il and i. In the other cases they remain separated, e.g. con la mia amica.
