Questo e questa

Let’s learn more about questo and its variants.

Questo e questa

Questo = this

Questo รจ il bagno.

Questo means this. It refers to something that is close to the speaker. It is followed by the verb essere and means “this is”:

Questo รจ il bagno. This is the bathroom.

Questo must be aligned with the noun it refers to and therefore has four forms:

  Singular Plural
Masculine questo questi
Feminine questa queste

Esempi:

Questa รจ la mia casa. This is my house.
Questi sono i miei genitori. These are my parents.
Questo รจ il soggiorno. This is the living room.
Queste sono le mie amiche. These are my (female) friends.

Questo can also be placed directly before a noun. Before a vowel questo and questa is usually apostrophized, but it is not obligatory.

    Singular Plural
Masculine Consonant questo libro questi libri
  Vowel quest’anno questi anni
Feminine Consonant questa casa queste case
  Vowel quest’idea queste idee

Esempi:

Quest’inverno vado a sciare. This winter I’m going skiing.
Questa casa รจ molto grande. This house is very large.
Questi cani sono tenerissimi! These dogs are so cute!
Questo lunedรฌ devo andare dal dentista. This Monday I have to go to the dentist.

Che cos'รจ? What is it?

If you want to ask “What is it?”, it is enough to ask: Che cos’รจ?

Che cos’รจ? – Una lampada. What is it? – A lamp.

With the question Che cos’รจ questo? it is emphasized that you refer to exactly this (and not to something else). This is suitable, for example, if you are just pointing your finger at something.

Questa sera or stasera?

Do you actually say for tonight, questa sera or stasera? You can say both! Stasera is nothing but the abbreviation of questa sera (que-sta sera). Is there a difference? Practically none, except that questa sera is more elegant and better suited to written language. Of course, this also applies to mattina and notte.

Questa mattina Stamattina This morning
Questa sera Stasera This evening
Questa notte Stanotte Tonight

For this afternoon, however, you can only say questo pomeriggio or oggi pomeriggio. There is no combined form.

'Sto

In colloquial speech, questo is often shortened to ‘sto (with an apostrophe to indicate the abbreviation).

Ci vediamo ‘sto weekend? Do we see us this weekend?
