La settimana prossima • Talking about the time and date

La settimana scorsa and la settimana prossima. We have already learned days of the week and months. Now it’s time to learn how to talk about the time and date.

Talking about the date

Domani è il 10 agosto.

Let’s learn useful vocabulary to talk about the date. For the date, you always need the definite article. The numbers are said normally: il dieci agosto, l’undici agosto…. Except the 1st of the month: il primo agosto.

Oggi è il 9 agosto.Today is August 9.
Ieri era* l’8 agosto.Yesterday was August 8.
L’altro ieri era* il 7 agosto. The day before yesterday was* August 7.
Domani è il 10 agosto.Tomorrow is August 10.
Dopodomani è l’11 agosto. The day after tomorrow is August 11.

*Era was is the past tense of essere. This tense is called imperfetto.

However, you don’t need an article if you specify the day of the week.

Domani è venerdì.Tomorrow is Friday.
Oggi è giovedì 10 luglio.Today is Thursday, July 10.

If you just want to say the year, you need the compound preposition nel and the year.

Siamo nel 2021.We’re in 2021.
Nel 2022 mi sposo.I’m getting married in 2022.

Talking about the time
