A che ora? At what time in Italian. Let’s learn how to talk about time in Italian. In this lesson we’ll talk about following time expressions: alle, dalle – alle and fino alle.

Mi sveglio alle sette

  • QUESTION: A che ora. A che ora ti svegli?
  • ANSWER: Alle. Mi sveglio alle sette.
  • Exceptions:
    • For una you use all’: All’una.
    • For mezzogiorno and mezzanotte you use only a: A mezzogiorno.
  • When speaking, the time is usually counted up to 12. In case of unclarity you can add di mattina, di pomeriggio, di sera, di notte.
  • Sometimes you can also count to 24, especially when talking about official transport timetables.
  • If the time is not precise, you can say verso le otto (around eight).

INFO: We use alle (a + le) because le ore is meant. With una then l’ora is meant, therefore all’ (a + l’).

La mattina mi sveglio alle sei e un quarto.I wake up in the morning at 6:15.
Pranzo a mezzogiorno e mezza.I have lunch at half past noon.
Ci vediamo alle otto davanti al cinema. See you at eight o’clock in front of the movies.
Parto per le vacanze alle cinque di mattina.I leave for vacation at five in the morning.
Il treno arriva alle venti e tredici.The train arrives at 8:13 P.M.
Di solito ceniamo verso le otto. We usually have dinner about eight.

Lavoro dalle otto alle undici

  • To express a time span, you use dalle – alle: Dalle sette alle otto.
  • Exceptions are again:
    • Una, with dall’ or all‘: Dall’una, all’una.
    • Mezzogiorno / mezzanotte, with da or a: da mezzogiorno, a mezzogiorno.
Ho il corso di italiano dalle dieci alle undici e mezza.I have Italian class from 10:00 to 11:30.
Lavoro dalle otto alle cinque.I work from eight to five.
Guardo un film dalle nove a mezzanotte.I watch a movie from nine to midnight.
La pausa pranzo è da mezzogiorno all’una.Lunch break is from noon to one.
Il negozio è aperto dalle nove di mattina alle sei di sera.The store is open from nine in the morning to six in the evening.

Lavoro fino alle sei

fino alle otto

  • If you want to say that something lasts til a certain time, you’ll use fino alle: Lavoro fino alle sei.
  • Exceptions are again:
    • Una, with fino all‘: Lavoro fino all’una
    • Mezzogiorno / mezzanotte, with fino a: Lavoro fino a mezzogiorno.
Il venerdì lavoro solo fino alle quattro.On Fridays I only work until four o’clock.
Ho lezione fino a mezzogiorno, poi pranzo.I have class until noon, then I have lunch.
Il film dura fino alle undici e venti.The movie runs until 11:20 P.M.
Fino all’una e mezza sono in pausa pranzo.Until 1:00 P.M. I’m on my lunch break.
Il supermercato è aperto fino alle nove.The supermarket is open until 9:00 P.M.
