C’era una volta una vecchina che viveva in una casetta ai margini di un villaggio. Raramente vedeva altre persone: nessuno andava fino alla sua casetta isolata, soprattutto in inverno, quando faceva freddo e c’era molto vento.

Una sera, una fredda sera di gennaio, qualcuno ha bussato alla sua porta. Naturalmente si è spaventata: chi poteva essere? Quando ha aperto… che sorpresa! Davanti a lei c’erano tre uomini vestiti riccamente a cavallo di grandi cammelli.

I tre viandanti – sì, proprio loro, i Re Magi! – le hanno raccontato che stavano andando a portare i loro doni al Bambino Gesù, il nuovo Re e Salvatore del mondo, ma non vedevano più la stella cometa che li aveva guidati fin lì. La vecchina però non aveva visto nessuna stella e non sapeva niente del Bambino Gesù.

– Vuole venire con noi a portare un dono al nuovo Re? – le hanno chiesto prima di rimettersi in viaggio.

La vecchina ci ha pensato su, ma… sicuramente era un viaggio molto lungo, e faceva davvero freddo. E poi aveva il pane e i biscotti nel forno! Così ha rifiutato e li ha salutati.

Ma più ci pensava e più si pentiva di non essere andata con loro. Così, quando i biscotti erano pronti, li ha messi in un grande sacco insieme alle sue cose. Siccome il sacco era troppo pesante da portare sulle spalle, lo ha legato ad una scopa e poi ha iniziato a cercare i Magi, ma non è riuscita a trovarli. Perciò ha bussato alla porta di ogni casa e ha lasciato un po’ di biscotti per ogni bambino, nella speranza che uno di loro fosse¹ Gesù, senza arrendersi mai.

E così da allora, ogni anno, la sera dell’Epifania la vecchina, che si chiama Befana, si mette alla ricerca di Gesù e si ferma in ogni casa dove c’è un bambino per lasciare dei dolci in regalo.

Once upon a time there was an old woman who lived in a little house on the edge of a village. She rarely saw other people: no one went up to her little isolated house, especially in winter, when it was cold and windy.

One evening, a cold January evening, someone knocked on her door. Of course she was frightened: who could it be? When she opened it…what a surprise! In front of her were three richly dressed men riding large camels.

The three travelers – yes, that’s right, the Three Wise Men! – told her that they were on their way to bring their gifts to the Child Jesus, the new King and Saviour of the world, but they could no longer see the star that had guided them there. The old lady, however, had not seen any star and did not know anything about the Baby Jesus.

– Would you like to come with us to bring a gift to the new King? – they asked her before setting off again.

The old lady thought about it, but… surely it was a very long journey, and it was really cold. Besides, she had bread and cookies in the oven! So she declined and waved them off.

But the more she thought about it, the more she regretted not going with them. So when the cookies were ready, she put them in a big sack along with her things. Since the sack was too heavy to carry on her shoulders, she tied it to a broom and then started looking for the Three Kings, but she couldn’t find them. So she knocked on the door of every house and left some cookies for each child, in the hope that one of them would be Jesus, without ever giving up.

And so since then, every year, on the evening of Epiphany, the old lady, who is called Befana, goes in search of Jesus and stops at every house where there is a child to leave some sweets as a gift.

Is this story well known?

Not everyone knows this story, but it is pretty well spread on the Internet. The “real” story of Befana occurs in different variations, but some elements are recurring: The Three Kings knock on the door of Befana, she does not go with them, but then she regrets it and wants to give a gift to the baby Jesus after all. So she sets off, but can no longer find the Three Kings and the baby Jesus, so she gives gifts to all the children.
