1. The smallest region of Italy is Valle d’Aosta

The smallest region of Italy is Valle d’Aosta, on the border with France. It has only 125 606 citizens, an area of 3 261 km² and only 74 comuni (small and big town).

2. The biggest region of Italy by population is Lombardia

The biggest region of Italy by population is Lombardia, with 10 041 828 citizens, an area of 23.862,85 km² and 1 506 comuni. As for the area, the largest region of Italy is Sicily with 25.702,82 km².

3. Five regions have more autonomy

There are five regions that have a special status, that means that they have more autonomy from the central government: Trentino-Alto Adige, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Valle d’Aosta, Sicilia and Sardegna.

4. Umbria is the only region in Mid and South Italy not bordering the sea

Italy has a special, narrow form. Except from the Northern regions, all regions in Mid and South Italy borders the Mediterranean Sea and boasts beautiful beaches. There is only one exception: Umbria. Umbria is a very green region with beautiful forests and small town.

5. Sicilia and Sardegna are the biggest islands in the Mediterranean Sea

The regions Sicilia and Sardegna are not only peculiar because they are actually islands, but they are also the two biggest islands in the Mediterranean Sea, with respectively 25 460 km² and 23 813 km².
