Saint Lucia, the Saint of Light, is a Christian martyr from the third century. According to legend, she brought food and help to the Christians who were hiding from the soldiers of the Roman Empire. She used a wreath of candles to light her way and had her hands free to take as much food as she could.
In Italy, Santa Lucia is celebrated mainly in Sicily, in Syracuse, the hometown of the saint. Here a large procession is organized with a silver statue of Santa Lucia, where her relics are kept.
Santa Lucia is also celebrated in some provinces of northern Italy. The children write her a letter, like to Santa Claus, and on the night between 12 12-13 December she arrives with her donkey and brings small gifts.
