CAPITOLO 1

Dopo Padroncina, ovviamente.
Finalmente.
«Kira, guarda cos’hai combinato!

«Chi erano queste persone?»
«Non lo so» ha risposto lei. «Però i nomi mi ricordano qualcosa…»

Was für Fragen!
“Kira!”‘

Endlich.
“Kira, sieh nur, was du angerichtet hast!

“So, ready to decorate the tree?”
Cody and I were sleeping in front of the fireplace, but at those words we got up and started barking agitatedly.
Of course! What questions! When do we start?
It was December 8: the day of the Immaculate Conception, decorations and the Christmas tree. Like every year, there was also Buddy to help us. Buddy is my favorite human! After Mom, of course.
We went to the attic to get the decorations. The attic was dark and dusty and there were many boxes. Mom opened the window to air.
The Christmas decorations were in a corner near the window. Mom and Buddy picked them up and carried them downstairs. I was about to go downstairs, too, when I heard a noise. I turned around and saw a bird. It had come in through the window.
Hey, you can’t stay here! I barked agitatedly. Go, go!
I ran toward the bird, but he was flying here and there and I couldn’t catch him. I was running here and there, too. Away, away! I barked.
“Kira!”
It was Mom, angry.
I stopped and looked around. Many boxes had fallen and opened, old clothes, toys and books were scattered on the floor in disarray.
Meanwhile, the bird had flown out the window. Finally.
“Kira, look what you’ve done! What a mess!”
But there was a bird! I barked.
“Come on, nothing happened,” said Buddy and began to tidy up. Mom, still angry, also started tidying up.
“Look, we forgot a ball for the tree!” Exclaimed Buddy after a while showing Mom a Christmas ball.
Mom took it and looked at it. It was white and blue. A snowman was painted on it. It looked very old. It was gorgeous.
“I don’t know this little ball,” she said thoughtfully.
“Look, it was in here” Buddy showed her a small, old box. Inside was a little card:

Christmas 1900

For Anna

May the magic of Christmas always be with you.

Your friend Amelia

“Did you see the date? 1900! This Christmas ball is over 100 years old!” said Buddy in amazement. “Who were these people?”
“I don’t know,” she replied. “The names remind me of something, though…”
“This was your grandmother’s house, right?” he asked. “Maybe Anna was a great-great-grandmother of yours.”
“Maybe,” she replied, continuing to look at the card. Then she took the ball and carefully placed it in the little box. “Well, this year we have a special ball for the Christmas tree. Thank you Kira,” she said and patted me on the head. Ah, thank goodness! She’s not mad at me anymore! I thought happily.
“Now let’s finish setting up, we still have to make the tree and decorate the house!”

CAPITOLO 2

Sembrava dipinta a mano.
Oh no!

Io e Cody siamo corsi in giardino.
Soddisfatta, ho iniziato a mangiarla.
Io e Cody ci siamo girati spaventati.

After setting up the attic, Mom and Buddy started decorating the tree with balls, garlands and lights. At the top of the tree they put the finial and finally Mom took the box with the ball we found in the attic. She carefully took it out and hung it on a branch. Finally, she lit the tree.
“It came out really well again this year,” commented Amicone with satisfaction.
“Even better, thanks to Kira!” said Mom.
Cody went to the window and barked.
“It has even started snowing. Christmas can come!” said Buddy, also going to the window.
I walked over to the ball to get a better look at it. It looked hand-painted. The snowman had a nice, white, round face, two black eyes, an orange nose, and a nice button smile. Around him was the dark blue sky, stars and snow.
A little jewel on the Christmas tree. I barked and wagged my tail happily. Then I turned to go to the window and watch the snow with the others.
“Kira, look out!” exclaimed Mom. Too late. My tail touched the ball, which fell and – CRASH! It broke into a thousand pieces.
I turned around and observed the damage. Oh no!
“Ah Kira, you are such a mess,” said Mom, sighing and smiling together.
Buddy picked up the shards with broom and dustpan and went to throw them in the trash outside in the garden. Such an ancient ball, so quickly broke. What a shame!

It continued to snow all day, in the evening Mom lit the fireplace and we all watched a Christmas movie together. I, however, was very sad. I was very sorry that I had broken the ball. With that thought, I fell asleep.

The next day everything was white. Cody and I ran to the backyard. The snow was cold and fluffy and it was fun to run and play! Mom and Buddy made a snowman, then shoveled the driveway. After a while they went inside the house because they were cold. Cody and I, on the other hand, stayed in the backyard for a while longer to enjoy the snow. As I looked at the snowman, I noticed that beautiful carrot he had as his nose. I really liked carrots….
I jumped and… I took it. Satisfied, I started eating it.
“But do you really like that orange thing?” asked Cody.
“Sure, it’s really good! Do you want some?” I asked him, but I already knew the answer.
“No, thank you,” he replied.
“I do! In fact, I want my whole nose back!” said a voice.
Cody and I turned around startled. The nose-less snowman looked at us angrily.

CAPITOLO 3

Un pupazzo di neve parlante? Ero davvero stupita.
«Oh, scusa! Ecco la tua carota.»
Lui l’ha presa e l’ha rimessa al suo posto. Mancava un pezzo.
Io e Cody lo abbiamo osservato in silenzio. Sembrava triste.
«Che succede? Possiamo aiutarti?» gli ha chiesto Cody.
«Ah.
Ecco cosa ti manca.

“Was ist los? Können wir dir helfen?”, fragte Cody.
“Ah.
Was könnte er vermissen?

Translation in English

A talking snowman? I was really amazed. The past years the snowmen had never talked. They just stood there in the garden, did nothing, and after a while they would melt away. This one, however, was different from the others. He moved his arms, his eyes, and even talked. And he was also a little angry.
“Oh, sorry! Here’s your carrot.”
He picked it up and put it back in its place. A piece was missing.
Cody and I watched him in silence. After a while he began to sigh. He didn’t look angry anymore. He looked sad.
“What’s going on? Can we help you?” asked Cody.
“Ah. I don’t know, I feel strange. I’m missing something,” he said.
I immediately felt guilty. Surely he was missing the nose piece.
“I’m really sorry. I’ll go get you another nose right away!”
I ran to the kitchen, opened the refrigerator and looked for a carrot, but there was none. So I got a zucchini and went back to the snowman.
“I’m sorry, the carrots are out. Would you like a zucchini?”
He took it and put it in place of the carrot. He looked very funny with a zucchini for a nose.
“Thank you very much,” he replied. “It’s a nice nose. But that’s not what I missed. I miss something else.”
Cody and I took a good look at him.
“A cap! That’s what you’re missing. All snowmen have a cap,” Cody said and ran into the house to get a cap. After a few minutes he came back with a Mom cap, red, woolen and with a pompom.
“Thank you,” he said. “It’s a nice cap. But that’s not what I’ve been missing. I’m missing something else.”
“Then you are missing a scarf!” I exclaimed. I brought him one of Mom’ scarves.
“Thank you,” he said. “It’s a nice scarf. But that’s not what I’ve been missing. I miss something else.”
“Maybe you’re missing a broom!” said Cody. She put a nice broom in his hand, but that wasn’t it either. What could he be missing?
It had now grown dark, and the snowman kept sighing.
“Kira, Cody, come inside!” called Mom to us.
“Go ahead, don’t worry about me.”
“Tomorrow we’ll find what you’re missing,” I told him. “I promise!”
And so Cody and I went back into the house, leaving the snowman outside, sad and alone.

CAPITOLO 4

«Buona sera amici, cosa fate ancora svegli?

“Was?”
“Dann bring mich rein.”

Making the snowman happy was not at all easy. Cody and I had tried everything, but to no avail. We had brought him mittens, blankets, pillows, toys, cookies, ice cream and popsicles, but nothing.
It was Christmas Eve and we still had not been able to help him. I watched the poor snowman from the window, out there in the dark, alone and sad.
It had snowed again the day before, and Cody had gotten the idea that maybe he was missing a friend, so we had made another snowman. But no, that wasn’t it either. The new snowman stood silent and still beside the first one, which kept sighing.
Mom had already gone to sleep, but I couldn’t fall asleep.
Finally I called Cody and we went out into the garden.
“Good evening friends, what are you still doing awake? Go inside to the warm…”
“We want to give it another try. Maybe you need to take a walk. Walks are the greatest thing in the world!”
Cody went to get the sled, and I helped the snowman up. There was still plenty of snow in the yard, so it was easy for Cody to pull the sled.
“Well? Do you like it?” I asked him.
“It’s nice,” he replied with a sigh, “but…” and then he froze. Cody also stopped. The snowman stared open-mouthed at the window of our living room, where the fireplace and Christmas tree stood.
“That’s what I miss!” he exclaimed, pointing at the window with his finger.
“What?”
“The Christmas tree.”
“The Christmas tree? But are you sure? We can’t take it outside, it’s too big and heavy.”
“Then take me inside.”
“But it’s warm inside, there’s even a fireplace burning, you’ll melt!”
“I don’t care. That’s where I need to be, I can feel it. It’s what I miss. It’s what I’ve been looking for all this time.”
The snowman looked very convinced. Cody then pulled the sleigh into the house, stopping right in front of the Christmas tree.
For the first time, the snowman smiled.
“Thank you friends, now I finally feel complete. I am in the right place. It is the most beautiful gift you could have given me. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
And so we stayed the whole night by the Christmas tree. And as the snowman told wonderful stories of times past, I closed my eyes and fell asleep, happy to have finally gotten his wish.

CAPITOLO 5

Cody

Doch dann erregte etwas meine Aufmerksamkeit.

I heard a noise and woke up. It was nighttime. Kira was still asleep. I got up and looked around.
The Christmas tree was still lit. But there in front, the snowman was gone. In its place was a large pool of water. It had melted away.
Predictable, I thought. Kira will be very sad.
But then something caught my attention. In the middle of the puddle of water was a piece of colorful glass. I moved closer to get a better look. It was a piece of the Christmas ball we had found in the attic and Kira had broken.
That was why the snowman wanted to be near the Christmas tree so badly: he had a piece of the ball in his heart.
Probably when Buddy had thrown away the broken ball, a piece had fallen into the garden.
I went back to bed.
I knew that ball was magic. I had known it right away when I had seen that letter in the attic. Anna and Amelia. Kira didn’t know those names, but I did. Kira had once found a magic costume and turned into a cat. The costume was a gift from Amelia. Who was was, a witch? There were other magical items in that attic? But for that Christmas, a talking snowman was more than enough.
With a smile, I fell asleep.

EPILOGO

When I woke up in the morning, the snowman was gone. In front of the Christmas tree there was only a big puddle of water. I was very sad. But then I saw.
“Cody! Cody, wake up!” I barked agitatedly.
He opened his eyes and stood up.
“Look!” I told him, pointing to the pool of water.
There in the center was … a Christmas ball. A wonderful blue and white ball with a snowman painted on it.
“Did you see that? That’s the ball we found in the attic that I broke with my tail!”
Cody approached in curiosity, and I got a good look at it. Then he smiled.
“It’s different. Did you see the nose?”
I moved closer to get a better look at it. “But it has a zucchini for a nose! How is that possible?”
“Christmas magic,” he replied, smiling.
“How nice, the snowman turned into a ball! Now he can be with us every year on the Christmas tree!”
“Did the snowman turn into a ball, or did the ball turn into a snowman?” asked Cody enigmatically.
I had no time to ponder that question; Mom and Buddy had woken up.
They, too, were amazed to find the little ball in the middle of a pool of water. They hung it on the tree, then had breakfast and unwrapped the presents.
For lunch, parents, grandparents, uncles and aunts, and Mom’s brother with his girlfriend arrived. Everyone wished each other well, toasted each other, and sat down at the table. There was a nice festive atmosphere. While the others were having lunch and Cody was lounging under the table, I walked over to the Christmas tree. The ball shone brighter than all the others. The snowman with the zucchini nose was smiling cheerfully. I, too, was happy that I was able to help him.
And as I looked at him, he winked at me.
Was I imagining it? Who knows. It is a magical Christmas ball after all!
Merry Christmas to you too, dear snowman!
